An Interview with Kim Prendergast, Owner of HIIT It With Kim

What is your name?

Kim Prendergast

What is your business name? How did you come up with it?

I own a group for a studio called HIIT it With Kim. I really liked the play on words and it just rolled off the tongue!

What products/services do you offer? Group fitness classes How would you describe your business?

My business is all about changing lives and empowering women through fitness. So many women feel they can’t do it but I’m here to prove to you that you can! Sometimes we just need someone to push up

What were you doing before you started business? And/or what else are you doing now (school/work etc)

I was working in a gym prior but I knew I needed to branch off on my own if I wanted to impact more lives. So I made the jump to open my own place. Scared and excited! It’s now been almost 6 years and I wouldn’t change it for the world!

How do you maintain a work-life balance while running a small business?

This is hard. Owning a business is a 24/7 thing. I make sure to create time where I literally turn off. Turn my phone off and go enjoy moments with my family. It’s very helpful to avoid burn out and overworking!

What strategies or practices have helped you navigate the demands of entrepreneurship?

Outsourcing things that I can. It’s super hard because as a business owner you want everything to be done perfectly and done by you! But outsourcing things that truly don’t need you has been a game changer for me.

What is your favorite kind of exercise class/routine? 

I love all fitness! I love a good heavy lift but I also love pilates! Plus the Hiit workouts in between too! It’s important to be well rounded in your fitness journey What’s your favorite thing about your business? The community of women I am surrounded by! I’m big on community and fostering a welcoming atmosphere so women can succeed and stay committed! It’s the best!

Most rewarding part of owning a Business? Most challenging?

Most rewarding: seeing people lose weight, get fit, gain confidence. Most challenging: getting up at 4:45am LOL

What do you do for fun in your down time?

I play in a women’s basketball league. We also have a camper that we take away on weekends to explore. I love to travel and explore!

What motto/quote do you always try to live by?

Nothing worth having comes easy. Your struggles develop your strengths. I could go on and on but I’ll stop!

What advice would you give to aspiring female entrepreneurs who are just starting their own businesses?

Be confident! And also understand that it is never going to be easy, but it will always be worth it. Also the positive and optimistic. Once you start to be negative and pessimistic, at least you into a negative spiral. But when you’re positive and optimistic, everything is always on the up and up and it gives you a better outlook on life!

Continue to impact and change lives. And help prove to people how fitness can change, improve and add value to all areas of life!
