An Interview with Megan Amrich, Author of “Show Up and Bring Coffee” and the “Joyful, Brave & Awesome” Blog

What is your name? How should people address you?

Megan Amrich

What is the name of your business? Do you own it, co-own etc.?

My website is called “Joyful, Brave & Awesome”. My book is called “Show Up and Bring Coffee: How to Support Your Friends with Disabled Children”.

What inspired you to open your business (or get into the field)? How long have you been active in this field?

My professional background is in journalism, design and marketing communications. In 2018, I shifted to staying at home full-time with my young son, JB, due to his complex medical needs. (JB has neurodevelopmental genetic syndrome.) I started writing about my experience to process this major life change. Soon, my blog Joyful, Brave & Awesome was born!

Over the years my husband and I have had an incredible support system of loved ones as we navigated life as parents to a disabled child. I wanted to write a guide for people who want to help friends who are caregivers but aren’t sure where to start. In Show Up and Bring Coffee, I share nine ways people can best step in and help when a friend’s life is altered by a child’s diagnosis.

Last show you binge watched?

I just finished rewatching New Girl. So good!

What is the most rewarding and most challenging part of your business?

The most rewarding part of being a writer is being able to help others feel better understood. Being a parent to a disabled child can be such an isolating experience, and knowing I’m helping others to feel seen, or to see loved ones in their own lives in a new way, is such a gift!

The most challenging at first was figuring out how to self-publish a book. I was fortunate to find an incredible publishing coach – Keylonda of KeylondaWrites (https://www.keylondawrites.com/services) – who helped me every step of the way.

What’s your favorite book?

The History of Love by Nicole Krauss

Favorite meal and where:

Anything at B. Napoli in West Springfield!

What do you do for fun in your down time?

I love reading, drawing, coloring, and making succulent arrangements. I also love watching “comfort TV” – whether it’s The Office, 90’s sitcoms, or Law & Order.

Do you have a favorite quote or mantra to live by?

“All of us have special ones who have loved us into being.” – Mister Rogers
